As far as quiet family dinners went, this was possibly the quietest that ever happened. The Director looked over his teacup at Ronald who sat opposite him at the table. Between them, Eiji and Mio sat in equally tense silence. They stole glances at each other, neither wanting to speak. It was clear from their father's furrowed brow and determined expression that there was something weighing on his mind. They'd only ever seen him like this once and they knew better than to interrupt him when he was like this.
A long, loud slurp of tea followed by a sharp cough broke the silence. "Ronnie-puppy? Everything okay?" the director asked, the chink of china following his question as he set down his teacup and folded his arms across the table. Ronald still sat there in disgruntled silence.
"Honey, you're scaring daddy."
"..."
"You're being awful quiet."
"..."
The kids continued to watch the one-sided exchange. But finally, the silence ended by a loud slam from Ronald's side of the table. He had slammed his hands on it, knocking his chair back in a rush to get up. The sound (and the fact this was coming from Ronald Lewis Knox of all reapers) caused the three to stare in surprise. "WHY?!" he finally said.
"How could they do that to him?"
Again, another long slurp of tea.
"Can't ruddy well say you love someone and... and just say you don't the minute they've gone through that!"
Another slurp. Mio shifted in her seat, moving to rest her head on her hand as she watched her dad's sudden yelling.
"What d'you mean it ent him, it very bloody well is! That's bollocks, I tell you! Rubbish!"
Eiji gave out an appreciative whistle.
"Madness! Absolute faffing madness! Could you really believe that?!"
There was a soft squeak as Eiji shifted in his seat to move closer to the table. This was getting good.
"How... how could anyone think it ent him... and just... stop loving him then? Or even think of abandoning him? When he'd need someone the most..." the reaper finally said as his head lowered and he sank back into his seat. There was a soft thump as Ronald slumped his head onto the table, burying it in his arms.
Again, Eiji let out a soft whistle. "Dad's bleeding serious, inne?" he chuckled.
"So it seems. It's rather surprising." Mio said as she leaned back and crossed her legs. Her tail waved slowly, only further emphasizing how pleased she was at this revelation.
"Wossat supposed to mean?" Ronald asked, peering at his two as he looked up from his arms.
Mio stood, slowly making her way to her father's side as she placed a hand on his shoulder. Her tail curled around him, almost protectively as it wound around his waist with the blade resting on his lap. "Papa, dearest," she began, keeping that hand moving from his shoulder to his back. "It's surprising to see you upset on someone's behalf. You would do it for mum, you would do it for father... but we've never seen you raise your voice before. Not like this."
"It ent fair, is all m'saying." Ronald protested but before she could say more, Mio shook his head and pressed a finger to his lips.
"You were always so fully accepting. This was why father trusted you and mother." she replied with a smile. "You were willing to accept who he was and who he would be, even if he was to accept his demonic half."
"Lookit you doing it all over again, dad." Eiji grinned from his seat.
"It's the same for West'n Avey, innit though?" Ronald huffed back quietly. "You accept them no matter what happens? If you do love them then you're in it for the long run, eh? No matter what happens to them?"
Mio smiled back, her hand moving to her father's head to lighty stroke his hair. "And that's what sets you apart, papa. 'You're in it for the long run'."
Ronald finally straightened up, a serious look on his face at last. "Course I am. I'm a reaper, ent I? There's nothing we've got but the long run."
"That prolly means there's none better suited, dad. If the long run's all you lot've got..." Eiji offered.
"You have our blessing, papa. Please make him happy. We'll take care of father." Mio added as she slipped onto his lap and leaned against him.
Ronald leaned back, staring at the ceiling as he kept an arm around Mio. His daughter followed the movement, leaning against his shoulder and pulling her legs up to cross his lap directly. He remained silent at the motion, keeping tht arm around her as he pressed a kiss to the top of her head. His other hand moved up, motioning for Eiji with the smallest smile. Eiji smirked back, ear flicking as he reluctantly got up. With a sigh, he headed close, pulling himself to sit on the armrest of his father's chair.
"Listen, you two." Ronald began, "S'not that I love your father any less, mind. S'just... I'm needed somewhere else."
He placed a hand on Mio's head, ruffling her hair before tugging Eiji over with a slight hug. "Your mum's found her place and it's with your father. I've found mine, alright?"
